This qualification is suitable for individuals who are interested in teaching, training, education sector, which includes further education colleges, adult and community education, universities, and private training providers. It is also ideal for individuals who are currently working in the sector and would like to develop their skills and knowledge to progress their careers.

Age: Learners should be 19+ to undertake this qualification.

Geographical Coverage: This qualification has been accredited for use in England and Northern Ireland.

The minimum core of literacy, language, numeracy: The minimum core of literacy, language, numeracy and ICT details the knowledge, understanding and personal skills in English, mathematics and ICT expected of all teachers in the sector. The minimum core document comprises three sections

  • Language and literacy
  • Numeracy
  • Information and communication technology (ICT)

Evidence of Teaching Practice

There is a requirement for a minimum of 100 hours of practice and a requirement to evidence working with groups of learners to achieve this qualification. There must be a minimum of 8 observations totalling a minimum of 8 hours. This excludes any observed practice completed as part of the Level 3 Award in Education and Training. Any single observation must be a minimum of 30 minutes

Assessments will be taken through written assignments, observations and the submission of other work products by the learner. The learner can achieve the qualification after the portfolio (written assignments, observations and other work-product) are internally and externally quality-assured.

Each learner is required to create a portfolio of evidence which demonstrates achievement of all the learning outcomes and the assessment criteria associated with each unit. The main pieces of evidence for the portfolio includes:
  • Assessor observation – completed observational checklists on related action plans
  • Witness testimony
  • Learner product
  • Worksheets
  • Assignments/projects/reports
  • Record of oral and written questioning
  • Learner and peer reports
  • Recognition of prior learning (RPL)

Total Qualification Time (TQT) includes Guided Learning Hours (GLH) as well as the estimated hours a learner spends on independent activities such as preparation, study, and assessment, under the guidance but not direct supervision of a lecturer, supervisor, or tutor. The credit value for this qualification is determined by TQT, with one credit equivalent to 10 hours of learning. 

The Total Qualification Time for this qualification is 728 hours.

Total Credit value 120.

Guided Learning Hours (GLH) for this qualification include all the time spent in contact with a lecturer, supervisor, tutor, trainer, or other relevant education or training providers. This encompasses guidance, supervision, and any other forms of direct interaction between the learner and these educational professionals.

The guided Learning Hours for this qualification is 390.
